Na Pali Coast Preparation (Pt 1/5) – July 2011

[Part 1] [Part 2] [Part 3] [Part 4] [Part 5] [View All Photos]

In addition to 6-weeks of rigorous physical training / conditioning for the Kalalau Trail (slow twitch muscle/ endurance exercises, strength training, joint conditioning, pack weight balancing etc.), there are several items you will need to acquire and be familiar with before your trip. Below is a basic guide for use as starting point for your research, but use the advice at your own risk. You should get many different opinions about backpacking, camping and safety/logistics of the Na Pali Coast before committing to your trip. You do not have to pack as heavy or light as I propose of the listed items, they are just there for you to decide if you want/need to bring them or not. I suggest our crew to carry packs between 30-35 lbs with water included… mines ended up being 48lbs(+)… go figure. lol. Feel free to download a copy of the list for personal use, but please do not redistribute without permission. If it does not display on your browser, the link to the pdf can be found here:

    Aloha Tammy,

Our crew hikes almost every weekend, sometimes twice a week. We started to hike with heavier packs 20-25 lbs on mild-graded hikes (e.g. kuliouou is similar in grade to much of the Na Pali Coast trail) to train for this trip. We also did the koko crater stairs several times, and were conditioned enough to do it 2x in a row without breaking. In the gym some of us did leg strengthening exercises; squats, leg press, dead-lifts, calf-raises/machines, etc… The above is not necessary for some people if they are in decent shape, but I tend to carry a heavier pack with more gear for camping than most people. Thus, I wanted to make sure I was able to complete the trail comfortably so that I wasn’t too fatigued to explore Kalalau Beach/Valley and Honopu Beach the days following our arrival. There is so much to do there, and though it is nice to just lounge on the beach, not seeing all that Kalalau has to offer is almost of a waste of time hiking there. In my opinion, the only time you should be lounging on the beach is at sunset or at night to look at the stars and moonrise / set. Good luck to you on your journey and let me know if you have any more questions. Thank you for visiting my site and for your praise.
