Kayaking

Kayaking to Kapapa Islet, Kaneohe Bay

Kapapa Islet is a low-elevation, 9.5 acre island on the edge of Kaneohe Bay (see map / inset, below). It is located ~2.0 miles from shore, and is ~1.25 miles from the popular sandbar (Ahuolaka Island) in the center of the bay. With a crew 6 strong (Justin, Meg, Aaron, Lynne, Katie and I), we made the paddle out on kayaks to the remote, offshore island to have a relaxing day in the sun, away from civilization... Like Chinaman's Hat (Mokolii Islet), waves break on the windward shoreline and wrap around the sides of the island, meeting on the leeward side. When larger swells are present, this...

Chinaman’s Hat – April 2012

Located < 1/3 mile offshore of Kuuloa Beach Park, Chinaman's hat (Mokolii Islet) is a common place for kayakers, stand-up paddle boarders and snorkelers/swimmers to travel to either explore or just to have a fun day in the sun... With a crew 15 strong (Justin Ugalino, Clayton Childs, Jennifer Liu, Lance Fujioka, Angie Ou, Jason Lee, Patrick Liu, Jenelyn Castillo, Reanne Solomon, Troy Takara, Seth Eason, Lenie and Franco Gallardo), we did just this. We started out our day meeting at 830 at Kualoa Beach Park. Loading our kayaks at the cars, we were able to easily wheel them "one-by-one" to water...

Kayak Fishing the Waianae Coast – October 8, 2011

After watching an episode of Hawaii Goes Fishing on "Kayak Fishing," I was quite eager to take my fishing-rigged kayak offshore on the Waianae Coast. If you saw that episode with the "AquaHunters", I'm sure you'd have done the same... Packing ~ 20 frozen Halalu's (juvenile Akule / Big-eye Scad) we caught a few weeks earlier from the summer run at Waianae Boat Harbor, Luke and I thought we would have a decent chance of success in catching some bigger game / pelagic fish. After mounting the kayak on my car, we launched from Waianae Boat Harbor on a sunny Saturday morning. The kayak...

Kayaking to the Mokulua Islets (Moku Nui) – September 4, 2011

In honor of celebrating the Labor Day weekend, the Lost Trailblazers (David Chatsuthiphan [UnrealHawaii], Reanne Solomon, Jennifer Liu, Jenelyn Castillo, Troy Takara and I) decided to kayak and BBQ on Mokulua Nui (Moku Nui), the more northern islet of the two Mokuluas offshore of Lanikai Beach. We were fortunate a couple of the girls had racks on their cars so that we could easily transport two rented kayaks (courtesy of GoBananas) as well as a third that owned. After loading up the kayaks, we piled into the two cars and headed out to Kailua over the H3 freeway. Knowing that there...
