Wailua Falls, Kauai

Wailua Falls is an easily accessible 173-foot waterfall located in the “South Fork” of Wailua River, Kauai… and after spending 2 days hiking in Kokee, it was time for the crew (Clayton Childs, Suzette Padden, Jen Castillo, Katie Ersbak, Baron Yamamoto, Josh Serrano [808 Goonies] and I) to get our swim on.

There is an unmaintained trail to the pool at the bottom of the falls, near the lookout.

…but it is muddy, slick, and can be fairly dangerous if one is not careful. Baron testing the anchors of some of the weathered ropes tied on the way down (left).

Arriving at the pool, it was more apparent how large the falls was…

Particularly by the mist generated and wind being blown at us, from hundreds of feet away.

After getting situated, it was time to blow up our innertubes and relax in the sunlight.

We even paddled near the base of the falls, but the current was too strong to stick around for long (left). So we decided to just float downstream, hehe…

Wailua River is one of the largest rivers on Kauai, and drains a large watershed. If you decide to swim here, please make sure to be prepared with appropriate footwear, as the descent can be dangerous. Flash flooding is common in Hawaii, so check with weather forecast for the area, and/or check the USGS gaging station for Wailua River South Fork.

Aloha and mahalo nui for visiting and come back again soon!
