Waioka Pond – aka Venus Pool (Pt 3 of 5) – January 2012

[Part 1] [Part2] [Part 3] [Part 4] [Part 5]

Waioka Pond, aka the Venus Pool, is a deep brackish waterbody approximately 200′ long x 150′ wide x 30′ deep (in center) and a short hike off of the Hana Highway…

…and although the faucet isn’t always keeping the stream and waterfall flowing, the pool itself is always filled by the ocean… AND ESPECIALLY great for jumping!!!

Launching off of the “west” wall (pictured above), lets you bomb into the deepest part of the pool.

Oh, and the wall is probably > 30 feet high and vertical ALL the way to the bottom of the pool… therefore, you shouldn’t hit anything on the way down but the water.

However, I strongly suggest landing with your toes pointed downward, as the height can make your landing painful or even dangerous… (NOTE: consumption of alcohol here is not intelligent and should not be encouraged, especially out of a glass… it was only this one beer, and mostly for a cool “action shot”).

Stunts like this can look really cool, but can also get you really hurt… especially since many of the ledges can be slick, and are really high. Please be careful and exercise caution if you come here… and especially check the water depth of the landing BEFORE doing any significant jumping. I’ve had friends injure themselves elsewhere before when they though the water was deep than it actually was.

I’d have to say that the Waioka Pond was probably one of the best coastal spot that we visited on our East Maui Trip. Though you can’t see it from the highway, it’s near a newly constructed steel bridge. There’s no parking nearby so you’ll have to either park considerably far or get dropped off nearby. make sure to respect the no-parking signs and homes in this area, they WILL call the cops if you park illegally. Also make sure to pack out EVERYTHING you bring in (e.g., just because orange peels are bio-degradable doesn’t mean you should throw them on the ground).

Good luck finding and stay safe!!!

Keep in mind this is a 5 part series (see top of page), including camping, waterfall hikes and other adventures… For more adventures of the Lost Trailblazers, either look at my other blogposts and “Adventures with the Lost Trailblazers” photo gallery. Thanks for visiting and come back again soon!
