Sunset and Moonrise from Polihale Beach – Kokee 2012 (Pt 4/4)

After a great day of hiking and relaxing at our cabin, a few of us (Steve, Clayton, Suzette, Katie, Jenelyn and I) took a road-trip down from Kokee to Polihale Beach. The beach is the furthest west on the island you can travel by vehicle, though it requires some off-roading and four-wheel drive.

Luckily, we made it down to the beach just in time to see the sunset… and take some photos. 🙂

Steve planned to stay over with some of his other local friends, and had a couple of boxes of wood for bon firing. Too good, haha.

Far from the city and with a fairly clear sky, I attempted to do some star trail photography before the moonrise.

Though we were expecting to see an epic moonrise over Kokee, the tradewinds were bringing quite a bit of cloud cover… so the obscuration was somewhat of a let down. I had to improvise with some creative light-writing. hehe.

…and it didn’t end back at the cabin. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention it was Clayton’s birthday… Happy birthday dude. Cue Baron’s quote of the trip, “KOKE`E 2012 BITCHES!!!,” lol. Great times with an epic crew on another amazing camping trip.

Polihale Beach is a great place to watch the sunset while on Kauai, though it does require an AWD/4WD vehicle. Some people access the recreational area by 2WD, but there’s a pretty good chance of getting stuck in the sand if not careful. Some of the locals may be friendly and help you if you’re stuck in the sand, but don’t count on it. Unlike other shoreline areas on Kauai, Polihale isn’t as friendly for swimming/snorkeling due to seasonal swells and strong currents. Please exercise caution while enjoying this beautiful place.

Aloha and mahalo nui for visiting and come back again soon!
