Sunset from the Ehukai Pillboxes – September 26, 2011

There are several places to watch a sunset in Hawaii. On Oahu, some personal favorites would be Yokohama Beach and Makaha on the west side; Mokuleia, Ehukai and Sunset Beach on the North Shore.

The last mentioned locations, Ehukai and Sunset Beach, are also famous for their amazing surf and long stretches of beaches. In the winter crowds may gather to watch surf competitions and huge surf. The calmer waters during the summer, allows for activities as snorkeling and swimming.

Spear-fishing and shore-fishing are also great activities to do here when the surf is small, but you only can do them when there are not a lot of people in the water…

For example, after the sun sets.

Until recently, I didn’t know of any hikes in this area. Fortunate enough to receive an invite from Josh Serrano (808 Goonies), we set out to find a trail to the Ehukai Pillboxes near Sunset Elementary School. Though the trailhead was not, the trail itself is obvious and likely known about by every resident of the North Shore community.

Arriving less than 30 minutes before sunset, we raced up the trail to the top of a small mountain, or really long hill.

The first pillbox was fairly large,

…though the view of the sunset was slightly obscured.

Thus, we ran further down the trail in hopes to verify the rumors of there being a second pillbox, with a less obstructed view.

We were welcomed by a far more open and panoramic view of Ehukai and Sunset Beach,

…just before the sun was enveloped by the north pacific.

And within 5 minutes,

…it was gone.

Mission accomplished, with the limited info and time to execute. Hopefully next visit I can catch the full moonset from here.
